Gareth first played Rugby at the age of 11 while at secondary school in England playing in the positions of prop and Hooker. He Joined his local Club, Redingensians Rugby Football Club at U-13s level with the best players from the other local schools and continued through the age groups levels playing to Colts level (combined U-18 & 19s) at the age of 16 for both the 15 a side and 7s teams. The following season he played for Henley College, the Berkshire County U-17s and made his debut for the Redingensians senior Club contuning to play for the clubs colts team. After a year away from the game due to injury, Gareth retuned, to Capain the Kingstion Universtiy 3rd team, leading the team to the Universtiy cup qtr finals, he went on to play for the both the University 1st XV  and Rugby league XIII. Gareth continued to play for his club Saturday sides, U-21s and various Sunday sides.

 Moving to Colorado with his family in 2003, he got involved in Grizzly youth Rugby in the summer of 2005 after moving back to the UK for 9 months, he returned for the Grizzly youth '06 season. He also joined Bill Gregg to assist in the coaching of the Boys and Girls MV/TR  High School teams. Gareth occasionally plays for various local old boy teams.

As well as playing and coaching in the USA he had played teams from or in Wales, France, Holland, Canada and Germany, 

Gareth is both a USArugby and IRB (International Rugby Board) certified referee as well as a coach
